Embodied Practice: Introduction to Mindful Walking

The recording below is a brief introduction to the embodied practice of Mindful Walking, drawing on insights and instructions from the Buddhist tradition. This practice can form a key part of our daily practices for resources and nourishing, equipping us with the presence and stability to work engage wholeheartedly with our lives, relationships, and experiences, even the more challenging ones. The approach shared here is especially inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village tradition, which emphasises mindfulness in daily life, and the cultivation of ease, peace and joy in all our activities.

So much going on in the mind, and all the while sun shines in the blue sky above us, the beautiful Earth beneath our feet, the birds singing and the breeze blowing. How many millions of steps we may have taken without even noticing the feeling of our footsteps on this precious Earth?

In the practice of mindful walking though. the invitation is to come back home to the present moment, and become aware of the sensations inside our body, and outside our body, as we walk. In the words of zen master and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh:

We do not walk with the aim of getting anywhere, we just walk for the pure joy of walking. We enjoy every step we make, savoring our breath. Every step brings us home to the present moment, the only place where life is possible“.
